There are many cacti cultivars available, such as Thelocactus, Beavertail cactus, Myrtillocactus, Turk’s Cap Cactus, and Organ-pipe cactus.  Generally, cacti enjoy bright sunlight and careful watering practices.  These plants are shallow rooted; careful handling will prevent them from toppling over or breaking.

Country of Origin

Southwestern United States, Mexico, South American countries, Arabia, most African countries, and anywhere else there are arid regions.

Maintenance Tips

Do not spray leaf shine on cactus plants.

Maintain the fast draining growing medium properly.  Use a fast draining growing medium made specifically for cacti and succulents.

Keep the plants clean to prevent pests and diseases. Maintain good air circulation around the plants. Take a soil sample.  If the soil is dry one inch below the surface, water the plant according to the amount of light the plant is receiving.

Pests and Problems

Aphids, Mealy Bugs, Red Spider Mites.

Crown rot and root rot will occur when the plant is overwatered or allowed to stand in water. Death will occur if plant is allowed to dehydrate completely.

Bruising will occur if  a cactus is mishandled and although the plant generally heals, there is usually scarring.
